He states, “In ancient Egyptian times, spirals were used to depict the nature of growing things and of life in general. In the universe, most galaxies are seen as reverse spirals. Plant life is constructed of spiral growth. Look at a pine cone from the top, or a creosote bush from above, and you will be aware of their spiral growth pattern.” Coville is also well known for his animal drawings on paper. Jack says, “They make a personal statement about his feelings for animals.” His drawings are so well received; he was commissioned by The Living Desert, Wildlife Preserve in the mid-70’s to draw the wildlife of Palm Desert, California. “My drawings are not photographic realism, but rather an expression of their essence”, states Coville, “I attempt to capture their fragility, dignity, the immediate moment, and their uncertain future.” He has further proven his devotion to animal welfare with his 2005 “Lion-A-Thon” benefit for the Lake County Humane Society sponsored by The Art Gallery of Willoughby, Ohio. Jack Coville was born and reared in Northeast Ohio. Jack has been a working artist for over 30 years. He received his BFA from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and earned a MFA from Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, where he was honored to have a piece chosen for their permanent collection. He has also shown in the prestigious Nelson Rockefeller Collection. Coville also received a Special Mention for Painting in “The May Show” in 1983 from Dr. Sherman Lee, Director of the Cleveland Museum of Art. His work can be found locally at Artist Review Today Showcase in the Galleria, downtown Cleveland. For more information on Mr. Coville, please call 216.771.0900.
