Red Sky at Night- Oil on Canvas
Throughout the years, Lou has painted a variety of
subjects, but the vast majority of his work is comprised of
landscapes. He is inspired by nature, especially “where
nature is moving – where things are happening.” All of his
pieces stem from some particular small moment that he
has witnessed; as an example, he referenced a silver lining
delicately gracing the edge of a cloud that he had seen just
a few days before. The beauty this minute detail held is
something he endeavors to communicate to those who
view his artwork. He wants his imagery to be
straightforward, to conjure “happy thoughts.” Lou’s
paintings may be of nature, but they have people in mind.

River's Edge - Oil on Canvas
Beyond his initial moment of inspiration, Lou constructs
his paintings through a combination of onsite observation,
photographic reference, and memory. Sunlight is the
element that oftentimes pulls a painting together, which is
interesting, for while Lou uses references for specific plants
and architectural elements, the way the light falls is
completely imaginative. In his words: “Although I paint
many different subjects and effects, I’ve always been
fascinated by the patterns of sunlight and shadow during
either the morning or late afternoon. The subjects I select
for these paintings are only excuses for playing with
sunlight and shadow.”
The artist’s work can be found in numerous collections
including those of the Cleveland Clinic, Ashland College,
Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, the North Olmstead Corporate
Center, the Allen-Bradley Collection, and A.R.T. Design
Showcase.
