Dr. Chang, the only international performer equally
dedicated to helping her students at Cleveland State
achieve their own greatness, saw the lights. She also saw
some of the current icons of pop culture with whom she
had been involved with a variety of events during the
previous few days – Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, the Dixie
Chicks. And she heard the cheering which she assumed was
for one of them as she made her way to the first X where
cameras were focused on her, microphones were thrust
towards her mouth, and the questions began.
For Angelin Chang, Ph.D. there was much that was
both surprising and emotional. The winning recording was
her rendition of “Oiseaux Exotiques” (Exotic Birds),
composed by Olivier Messiaen and played with the
Cleveland Chamber Symphony, John McLaughlin Williams
conducting. Messiaen and his wife, Yvonne Loriod-
Messiaen, had been among her professors at the
prestigious Paris Conservatoire. He had also been the
subject of her doctoral dissertation.
“I wish I could remember what happened.
‘The category is… And the nominations are… And
the winner is…”. The little she does remember had
an impact on everyone. In a world where the
teacher is either forgotten or the student tries to
slavishly copy the style of a favorite teacher’s
performance, Angelin stresses two values. The first
is that each artist find his or her own style
regardless of the teacher. And the second is that
teaching is as important as performance for neither
she nor anyone else being honored that night would be
there without the teachers who first helped them master
their field.
